History of Sacramento Airport

On October 21, 1967, what is now known as Sacramento Airport opened its doors as Sacramento Metropolitan Airport with one runway measuring 8,600 feet. The original runway was located on the western side of the airfield and has since been renumbered and renamed as 17R/35L. In the past, air transportation to Sacramento was handled by what is now known as Sacramento Executive Airport, which was once known as Sacramento Municipal Airport.

When it opened in 1967, Sacramento Metropolitan Airport was the first airport west of the Mississippi River that was explicitly purpose-built for public use. Sacramento Airport, along with the other airports that are a part of the Sacramento County Airport System, is financially independent thanks to user fees and leasing income. Operating costs do not use any municipal, state, or federal tax dollars at any level.

1998 saw the debut of the unified rental car facility and Terminal A. The terminal for aggregated rental cars was the first of its kind in the country. It provided all customers with a single point of access that could be reached by a single shuttle and centralized all rental cars. Because of this innovation, bus operations were expedited, which reduced congestion at the terminal, improved air quality, and improved customer service.

The airport was rechristened Sacramento International Airport after constructing the new Terminal A. On the other hand, it received international flights in 2002, when Mexicana began operating nonstop service to Guadalajara.
